Niche Business Support Services

One of the things that I decided a long time ago was that I wanted to be able to work from home instead of from a cubicle. As a result, I became a writer with a diverse set of skills which have allowed me to work for a range of different types of companies. Recently I have branched out to offer other business support services besides simply copy writing and web writing.
What I have discovered as I have done this is that there is a fine line which must be walked when starting to offer these services as a niche service. For awhile I found myself doing business support primarily for cost segmentation firms. One cost seg company that I worked with recommended me to someone else and soon all of my clients were in this business.
On the one hand, this was great. It meant that I learned the cost segmentation business inside and out and was therefore able to command a higher hourly rate of pay for my work since I had become an expert in this field. On the other hand, it meant that I was limited to solely working in this niche area and ultimately got bored with the work. Striking a balance between having a niche and branching out is something that all business support service providers should think about figuring out.
