Making a Simple Compost Bin

Posted by busViewr on September 25, 2009

My mother has been hinting to me lately that it would be nice to have a composting structure in her back yard. She knows I picked up a lot of the DIY talents and duties from my father while he was alive, and she usually counts on me to take care of her house and yard now that he’s passed on.

While the idea of a composting system sounded pretty cool, I really didn’t want to take the time to figure it all out. Instead I went online to see how much a system might cost to just buy. Was I ever in for a shock when I saw the price tags on some of the super systems that existed out there!

If you were in a situation where you might need something neat, tidy, and fully operational right now, I could understand spending upwards of $300 or $400 dollars for a fancy, rotating compost bin system. While I have a lot of love for my mother, I wasn’t going to spend that sort of money to find out she’d stopped composting 2 weeks after I put the system in.

Instead of spending the big dollars, I did some research to see what it would take to build an effective compost system of our own. There was a wide range of options available. In the end, I simply picked up a $13 plastic garbage container with lid from the Home Depot, drilled a bunch of holes up and down the sides, and set that out back to collect Mom’s kitchen recyclable organic materials.

We Are Finally Here!

Posted by Busyview on February 20, 2009

Hi everyone! Consider this blog number one of many to come.  It took me a while to get online after moving into our new place but the wait has been totally worth it!  Our apartment is a gorgeous two story studio that overlooks the beach.  We are a few minutes bike ride from San Diego’s Gas Lamp District so we couldn’t have asked for a better location.  You all know I was so sad to leave Phoenix having lived there for the first 23 years of my life but I’m so glad I made the leap with Neil.  He clearly loves it here too and has already met a group of guys he can go shuffle-board playing with on the weekends.

There are so many things to take care of that I didn’t even take into consideration though.  For one thing I needed to get new car insurance out here which turned out to be much more expensive.  I needed to find a new doctor and dentist, for the both of us I might add cause I knew Neil would never get around to it!  And then there’s the question of life insurance.  It hadn’t really occurred to me before but when you begin to settle down with someone it’s time to look into life insurance premiums.  I’m useless at this kind of thing so I’m hoping some cheesy salesman will knock on our door one day offering a premium finance deal we can’t refuse so we don’t have to do any of the work!  It’s all coming together though and I’m so happy to be starting my life here in this beautiful city with Neil.  I’ll check in with you all soon!
