Do you need new equipment for your business? Are you having trouble finding equipment that you can actually afford? If so then you might want to ask yourself if you’ve checked out any self storage locker auctions recently. These auctions can be one of the best places to get great used equipment at a really low cost.
You may not know this but if you abandon your items in a self storage unit then the company that owns the unit will eventually have the right to keep those items. This is in the contract that you sign when you get a storage locker. A lot of people don’t realize this because they wouldn’t ever abandon their items. However, a lot of people do indeed abandon their items in these places. When they do, the storage locker company usually puts these items up for sale in an auction.
Keep your eye out for announcements about these types of auctions. You will want to look specifically for announcements from business storage lockers since they are the ones most likely to have the equipment that you might be seeking. It’s kind of like shopping at a yard sale but it can be a lot more fun!

Most people think of a computer scanner as something to be used for capturing information and images. However, scanners can also be used for collaboration purposes.
Here are just a few of the ways that individuals and businesses might use scanners to collaborate with one another:
- Basic scan and share. Scanners often function as communication tools when people scan something and then email it to someone else in order for them to work on it.
- Scan information to be shared with a large group of people. Businesses that have networked scanning systems have it set up so that one person can scan a piece of information and then easily use the scanner to send that information to a bunch of other people.
- Keep track of all information for everyone to access. Scanners that come with document management software will keep a computerized record of everything that’s been scanned. This makes it easy for everyone with access to the scanner to find and use that information.
There are a lot of different types of devices that a business might use for collaborating with others. Scanners are often overlooked as one of those devices. However, they can be a great collaboration tool when used correctly in a business.

Used forklift for sale was what the sign said. It was an artistic display of old abandoned manufacturing tools and machines. The California forklift art show was held at the California fairgrounds in Sacramento. This particular show was to showcase how much things have changed in manufacturing over the years. I was really impressed by the differences in the machines and tools and what an impact they have made in our growth as a country in the last 100 years or so. Being presented with these different machines and tools and seeing their modifications as the years went by were amazing to see.
I would have never thought to have done an art show where the main subject was manufacturing tools and machines. It does not sound as though that would be an art show that people are interested in. But the amount of people that were there to see the presentation surprised me. People, I think have a natural affinity for seeing where we came from in regards to the tools and machines that shaped our nation. Having that available in front of you, keeps you thinking about how much further we will even be going in the future.

My family owns several large commercial greenhouses that supply many retailers in this region. The plants we grow require different temperature ranges, which means we must use a combination of air conditioning, fans, and heaters for control. We mostly grow plants ranging from ferns to orchids. And it’s not just the plants we want to keep comfortable - our people deserve it too.
We’ve been discussing the pros and cons of solar energy and whether we should have solar power panels installed. Even with the tax credits, we’re still looking at a significant investment of our own, but we don’t have to purchase the system - we can lease it, or just buy the power. Buying it would be cheapest in the long run. We’re still debating that. As a business, we’ve been affected by poor economic conditions; at the same time, we know that going solar makes sense anyway. It’s a long term investment. My family has been in business for 75 years. We’ve weathered downturns before and managed to come through every time.
So at this point we’ve pretty much decided to go ahead with the conversion. It will be a big change for us. Since I’m overseeing this project, I want to do a good job.

Some of today’s small business owners feel that although they would love to help out their inventory and make it a little bit stronger, they just can’t do it. They can’t do it because the price is way out of their range. The truth is that you can’t be worried about these types of things. Is it worth your while to make a technology upgrade? This is absolutely the case.
Money is tight right now and every business owner knows that. But what are you doing by sacrificing the long term viability of your company because of some rough months. Competing in the world of business is all about offering the same or more as your competitors. If your competitors have barcode scanners, then your customers will want to shop there. If your competitors have an IT asset tracking software in place, then you aren’t going to make as much money as them.
It is really simple in business. The people who put money back into their company are going to make more on their investment. When you invest in a time and attendance software program, you will reap the rewards. The costs might be up there now, but that will equal out over the long haul.

Randy wanted to know how all these things were made. Not how they were put together. Rounded parts were hard to make and you couldn’t just cut all around and just hope they would turn out right. While Randy was a professional acrobat and didn’t have time for screw machine training, the concept of wood and metal turning still interested him. After all, even the long railings that he often flung himself from were made by a large screw machine. These lathes were needed to make the material smooth enough so that he could flip, land, and twist on them without tearing apart his hands and arms.
The posts and a variety of other turned parts that Randy encountered during his daily routine were designed and shipped way before he arrived in Orlando. They were in part an exchange between a dance training company in Halifax and the acrobatic teaching school’s advertiser’s shop expert. Not to be outdone, the principal of the acrobatic teaching school himself had once operated a lathe to make his own keys. Randy, though, he never needed to be able to run one of these, was glad to be back on the uneven bars once again.

Business expenses are basically anything that you spend in order to run your business. You don’t have to justify necessity — for instance, the IRS is not going to argue with you over whether you really needed such and such advertisement — but they do need to be realistic expenses. (i.e., The book you bought your daughter to keep her occupied while you work doesn’t count as a business expense.)
There are a lot of business expenses that a landscaping business can deduct from their gross income, such as:
- Equipment and machinery, such as an EZ Screen topsoil and gravel screening machine, or a compact portable screener.
- Your work truck and all gas, maintenance, etc. if you buy it new solely for business use. If you use your personal truck, you would keep track of the mileage on the odometer at the beginning and end of every work day, multiply it by the IRS’s allowance per mile, and deduct that amount from your gross income as business use.
- All advertising expenses, including signs for your truck, door-to-door flyers, mailings, newspaper or magazine ads, website costs, etc.
- Uniforms that you and/or your employees wear.
As you can see, there are many business expenses that a landscaping business can deduct from its gross income in order to minimize its tax liability. I highly recommend getting out a book and doing your research on the subject, or even consulting with a professional, before tax time rolls around. The year is almost over!

There are home improvement and hardware stores in every city because we often need to use tools in the course of our daily lives. Tools may be used for any multitude of different jobs but there are three basic areas of life which require the ongoing use of equipment.
The areas of life that typically require purchases and use of equipment are:
- Home Improvement. Whenever we need to do something to improve our homes, we need to make sure that we have the right tools to get the job done. This applies to landscaping as well as to changes inside the home.
- Building. The construction of new buildings always requires extensive equipment. Without the right tools, the buildings can’t be properly erected.
- Office and home office. Newer business equipment is required for any office or home office to function properly.
Consider the equipment purchases that you’ve made in the last year and you’ll probably see that the majority of them have fallen in to one of these three categories. This doesn’t mean that other sectors or facets of life don’t require equipment but that nearly all of the equipment purchased will be used for one of these three purposes.
