From Hamlet comes the phrase, an old man is twice a child and I thought that it was appropriate for this post. I didn’t know that it could be that hard to find someone to care for your relatives.

I have a friend who has two kids under the age of five. In addition she has an elderly mother who is often in need of her help. Her mom does not live close by so it’s hard for her to arrange these things on the phone. In the past few years many companies have cropped up helping the elderly with everyday tasks and problems. My grandmother has a young student come over to her house three times a week to take her to the store or Dr.s appmnts. the entire family is grateful for this service, so that when we spend time with my grandmother it’s more quality time and not always running her around to errands.

Great post. I have a grandmother who has just celebrated her 90th birthday. Her husband passed away last year, and she wanted to stay in their home of fifty years. It took the family quite a while to find someone to assist her, we finally settled on a student at a local tech school. The student was studying to become a pharmacist. There are many agencies now that specialize in elderly care, I think it’s especially important to utilize them as they do the back ground checks and save you a lot of time.

Great article! In many states you can take HHA classes in any licensed care giving agency and it would cost couple to few hundred dollars. Also many caregiver both licensed and experienced are available for direct hire at fraction of cost and with background check at http://www.choiceeldercare.org/caregivers/
