Have to Work as Hard for Mom as I Do for Baby!

Posted by BViews on January 16, 2009

They say two year-olds are like teens, and that the elderly are like babies.  Well, I would at least agree with the latter because I have to spend as much time checking into the references of the people taking care of my mom as I do for the people taking care of my toddler!

I’m not sure how much training people have to have to drop in to provide adult day care for your parents-you’d hope they’d have to have SOME home care training.  I might have been grateful just for someone willing to pop in and play cards with her, but my mom is getting weaker and I never quite know when she’ll go downhill just enough to need more intensive care, and I’d rather have someone lined up now that she gets to know while she’s more cognizant.  But just like you have to check for child abuse in a babysitter’s background, you need a background check on an elder-care giver as well.  I was glancing over some elder abuse resources so I can recognizes it if it ever happens.  The resources out there nowadays are fantastic!  There are all kinds of products on home care provider training, for instance.  And the retirement groups like AARP, VA, MediCare or MediCal and even Social Security really help out on how to access free services for the home bound.  But, boy, they don’t make it easy to find!  As a matter of fact, it was easier to do all this for the two year-old!
